Summary
Aaron had sworn a life of celibacy until a fateful day where he was forcefully given a wife. This resulted in a new beginning of his life.
“Sir, Miss Charlotte is causing trouble over at the Werner household again.” Aaron said, “So, have you calmed down already?” Charlotte replied, “No…” The man continued, “I want more people to help her out.” “But sir, Miss Charlotte has hospitalized someone after her fight.” “Well, does she look satisfied to you?” “No.” While continuing his work, the man said, “Carry on then.”
However, he became furious when he found out that she was getting into fights again. He exclaimed, “What is wrong with you, Charlotte?!” Charlotte replied, “You were never like this, honey.” However, the man pointed at her pregnant belly and said, “Were you ever pregnant back then?” He was concerned because she was getting into fights while being seven months pregnant.
Apparently, the victim was not the only person terrified of her, he was also mortified to find out about what she did, but she was still so smug about winning the fight without much effort at all.

Smiling, Mrs. Ben Lawson, nee Alice Werner, indicated the woman seated on the chair in the old photograph she was looking at and said, “That’s our mother-in-law.”
Her sister-in-law Charlotte Brown, or Mrs. Aaron Lawson, nodded slowly. “She looks like a very warm, gentle person.”
“That she is. She was the most loving, gentle person I knew,” Alice replied, and her mind drifted back to memories of times past.
She turned the pages of the photo album she was showing Charlotte and stopped at a picture of two children.
“This little boy in green is Sean. The little girl…” The other figure in the photograph was a little girl in a white dress. Alice kept looking at her and fell silent.
“That must be Julie,” Charlotte murmured.
Alice jerked her head up and stared at her, startled.
Charlotte merely smiled faintly and gave a little nod. “Aaron’s told me all about it, Alice. You don’t need to hide it from me.”
She had come here today not just to look through old photographs of her husband, but also to find out more about Julie Lawson.
Alice gave a deep sigh. “Dear Aaron. He’s always had the habit of keeping everything to himself. Perhaps you’ll be able to make him happy at last, though. Promise me you’ll never hurt him, Charlotte. Please?”
Charlotte couldn’t help chuckling, and her reply carried a distinct note of sarcasm. “Alice, what on earth are you talking about? As if I have all the time in the world to plot against him or harm him when I barely have time to love him? Nonetheless, I’ll accompany him whenever the occasion calls for us both to make an appearance and never leave his side. That I can guarantee you.”
Alice smiled with a trace of relief.
“Since we’re on that topic, could you tell me what happened to Julie? I’m completely in the dark, and Aaron won’t tell me either,” Charlotte coaxed.
Alice considered this for a moment. “If I tell you, Charlotte, I hope you won’t be upset with Aaron after that.”
Charlotte nodded, determined to find out what had happened.
Satisfied, Alice smiled faintly. “Did you know that our father-in-law was involved in politics back in the day?”
Charlotte had not been aware of that. Her father-in-law, Donald Lawson, was around the same age as her own grandfather. As far as she was concerned, anything that had happened to Old Mr. Lawson was as remote as the events she had studied in her history books.
“He held an important government post and was known as a stern, just man who was impartial and impossible to corrupt. He made a lot of enemies as a result. Eventually, someone secretly informed the authorities that he was involved in bribery and corruption. The prosecutor assigned to the case deliberately dragged the investigation out for half a year, and incensed Old Mr. Lawson so much he immediately tendered his resignation as soon as his name had been cleared.”
During the six months of the investigation, Donald had been forced to kick his heels at home. Unfortunately, the accusations against him had left a stigma that almost jeopardized his son’s studies.
Thirty years ago, no educational institution would accept a boy whose father was a corrupt government official.
Donald had finally been vindicated when the government investigators established his innocence. However, he had immediately resigned as soon as this was officially announced and turned his talents to business instead.
“Donald is an exceptional man with a first-class brain. He used his vast network of contacts from his previous job to help him pave the way for his business ventures, and within a few years, the Lawson Group had grown by leaps and bounds.
“Unfortunately, however, he eventually crossed an unspoken taboo with other organizations. The Lawson Group was an ethical enterprise, and it continued to expand. This made Donald very rich, but it also meant that other people’s earnings were reduced as a result.
“Right around the time the Lawson Group was fast becoming a rising star in the business world, Sophia was born. It was certainly a surprise because her mother was considered rather old to have a child at the time. I had Sean not too long after that. The entire family was thrilled, I can tell you. We celebrated in style and took the two children everywhere…in retrospect, that might have been a mistake. It attracted attention and highlighted the Lawson family’s Achilles heel.”
Charlotte leaned against the arm of the couch and cupped her chin in her palm, listening intently.
Alice continued, lost in her memories. “That day, Sean and Julie were playing in the garden when a group of people suddenly showed up out of nowhere. They grabbed Sean and tried to run off. Aaron was on his university break at the time; he happened to be looking after the two of them in the garden. When those people took Sean, Aaron kept trying to drag him away from them, but to no avail. By that time, though, the household had been alerted, so the kidnappers abandoned Sean and took Julie instead.”
“What happened to Aaron then?” Charlotte only cared about the fate of her beloved husband.
Alice took a moment to recall the scene. “He was on the ground, hanging grimly onto one of the kidnappers’ legs, trying to stop them from taking Julie away. But then, the kidnappers took him with them as well.”
Charlotte’s brow furrowed slightly. This was the first she had heard of her husband being kidnapped in the past.
“How did Julie end up going missing then?”
Alice shook her head; she did not know either.
At the time of the incident, the entire family had been thrown into chaos. Her mind had completely blanked out any memories of that awful day when she had nearly lost Sean.
It was only after she came out of her shell-shocked state that she discovered the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of ten billion dollars.
Donald reported the matter to the police right away, but the kidnappers then sent the family a picture of Aaron. He had been severely beaten and was covered in blood.
No parent could possibly look at something like that without anguish.
When Mrs. Lawson saw the picture of both her son and daughter covered in blood, she instantly fainted on the spot.
