“Help! Somebody help!”

“Aaargh!”

As Bastian Shepard stood in front of the French window in his five-star hotel room and watched the hellish scene unfolding on the streets below, his hand trembled uncontrollably until he nearly dropped the cigarette he was holding.

If someone saw him close-up, the person would have a clear view of his ghostly pale face and visibly shaking knees.

It was all because he had just witnessed a young woman who was quite a beauty just moments ago was now turned into a bloodthirsty monster with blood streaking her face. Her expression was just as gruesome and terrifying as she took down a man double her size and chomped down on him like a feral beast.

All at once, blood sprayed across the young woman and dyed the lower half of her body red!

Although that man fought back as hard as he could, he still couldn’t shake her off. Eventually, his shouting became quieter, and his struggle became feeble.

In the end, he stopped moving altogether…

Holy sht! It’s a fcking zombie!

H-Holy crap… Thank f*ck that I’ve prepared for this in advance!

Up until three days ago, Bastian was the 19-year-old son of a relatively well-known and wealthy family in Janwick. However, a series of unfortunate events made his life hit rock bottom.

Three days ago, his father passed away from a car crash, and his mother followed suit soon after as her overwhelming grief triggered a heart attack.

That was not all. Even the family company he was set to inherit was on the brink of bankruptcy.

Just when Bastian felt as if the sky had come crashing down around him, he heard a strange voice suddenly appear in his mind—something called a Lucky Draw System had chosen him.

The System told him that the apocalypse was happening in three days, and the survival of mankind would be threatened. In order to live, he had to top up the System with money, which could then enable him to survive this period of mortal peril.

Despite the System’s mysterious appearance in his life, he was able to take time out of his grief and heed the warning anyway. Better safe than sorry, he thought. Thus, he gathered all the funds he could and moved everything to this five-star hotel.

The System was rather picky; it would only accept material valuables and not banknotes, so the hotel suite was full of gold, diamonds, jewels, and other precious items.

While Bastian did consider warning the rest of humanity about the arrival of the apocalypse by reporting it to the police or informing the media, in the end, he decided against it.

Even if he was fully convinced that it would happen, if he did announce to the world that the apocalypse was coming, they would not believe him and think he’d gone crazy.

Bastian made all the preparations. Despite the setbacks he had just been dealt with in life, he didn’t want the apocalypse to happen for real, but now…

While he was the son of a wealthy family, he was just a regular college student. He was willing to admit that he was still a child in many ways.

He would’ve thought this was all a dream if it hadn’t been for the fact that the System in his mind spoke back to him now and then!

“Grr…”

“Grrrh…”

A series of growling sounds made Bastian snap back into reality.

At least seven other zombies were now crowded around the man that the young woman had overpowered earlier.

It wasn’t just the splattered blood now. He could see the fluid of the man’s brain spewing out of his skull.

This was just like what he had seen in every zombie movie. Mangled bits of flesh littered the street while liquids of all colors and viscosity splattered all over the place.

“Blech…”

Bastian’s face drained of all colors, and he started dry heaving as waves of nausea hit him with full force.

“What on earth is going on, System? Why’s there suddenly a zombie virus outbreak? And also, why are you here?”

Overwhelmed with terror, his mind was in complete chaos. He couldn’t think straight, so he tried to ask the System questions to distract himself from the mounting pressure.

“Ding! You do not have access to that information, Host!”

What the f*ck?! Bastian cursed to himself.

He wanted to calm himself down. After looking at the cigarette that he had broken in half earlier out of fright, he decided to get another out of his pocket. He flicked his Zippo lighter open with an audible snap and lit the cigarette.

He was in urgent need to ease his fraught emotions and compose himself.

The world seemed to quieten in the few seconds it took him to light the cigarette.

However, a few seconds later…

Slam!

Something banged against the door to his hotel suite!

A hair-raising sound followed soon after. Bastian recognized what it was. It was the sound of nails scratching at the hotel’s iron door!

It’s the zombies!

Damn it! They heard the sound from the lighter!

Thankfully, he had fortified the door. Not only did he add over a dozen deadbolts to it, but he even blocked it with a large closet.

It was only yesterday that he asked the hotel manager to install the additional deadbolts on his door. The hotel manager had eyed him strangely and would’ve probably chased him out of the hotel if he hadn’t paid them a handsome sum.

Even so, his already blanched face somehow managed to turn even paler when he heard the sound of the zombies attempting to break his door down.

He was well and truly terrified!

He didn’t know how long the reinforced door could last, and the thought of him sharing the fate of the man out on the street when the zombies managed to get into the suite sent chills down his spine.

However, he wasn’t in an entirely hopeless situation. Thus, in the very next moment, he called out for the System, “System! System! I’m about to die here! You’re not going to tell me that the prerequisite conditions for redemption haven’t been met yet, right?”

“Ding! The start of the apocalypse has been detected. You may now use the reward redemption feature and the lucky draw feature. You now have access to 40 square feet of inventory space.

“Ding! If you wish to redeem a reward, you may exchange valuable resources for survival points. The value will be calculated by the System. Each lucky draw requires ten points. You may use the consecutive draws function of multiples of ten draws each time. Consecutive draws come with the chance of drawing an advanced card.

“Ding! Here’s a friendly reminder: there are no limits to using a basic card, but using an advanced card will require a fixed amount of survival points.”

After listening to the series of announcements from the System, Bastian quickly gestured at the gold and jewels piled up on the couch. “Quick! Exchange that for points!”

The gold and jewels instantly vanished, and the System’s voice rang out in his mind again. “Ding! You have successfully exchanged 181 survival points. Would you like to use the lucky draw?”

Bastian was a little startled to hear that the valuables worth over a hundred thousand only garnered a tiny amount of survival points, but he soon snapped out of it and hurriedly said, “Yes! I want a consecutive draw of ten draws!”

“Congratulations, Host. You have received ten basic cards—ten Ebony Watchmen Summoning Cards.”

Ten yellow cards with blue borders appeared in his hand. Every card depicted a soldier in black combat gear, a pair of goggles, and a gas mask who was armed with an M4A1 carbine.

“Oh, damn! He looks like a character in one of the zombie games I played…”

Bastian couldn’t help but exclaim when he saw the ten Ebony Watchmen Summoning Cards in his hand.

The moment they popped up, the System in his mind asked him if he wanted to use them.

He didn’t even hesitate before selecting to use all ten.

Crash!

At the same time, the large closet that had been blocking the door fell over, and the door flew open. Immediately, a zombie began shuffling into the room!

“F*cking hell!”

Bastian stared at the blood-drenched zombie in horror. He wanted to run and hide inside the bathroom, but his body was frozen in fear. A warm sensation trickled down his pants, and the smell of pee wafted up his nose!

He was so terror-stricken that he… peed his pants!
